How to format JSON online

  1. Paste your JSON into the input pane, or click Open file / drop a .json file.
  2. Pick an indentation style: 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs.
  3. Click Beautify (or press Ctrl + Enter). The formatted, syntax-highlighted result appears on the right.
  4. Copy it to your clipboard or download it as a file.

Why format your JSON?

Minified JSON from APIs, log files, or builds is cheap to transfer but hard to read. Pretty printing adds consistent indentation and line breaks so you can scan structure at a glance — spot missing fields, inspect nested objects, and debug faster. When you are done, use Minify to strip the whitespace back out before shipping.

The formatter also validates as you type: if your input is not valid JSON, you get the exact line and column of the first syntax error, not just a vague failure.

Frequently asked questions

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?
No. JSONKit runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your JSON is never sent anywhere, stored, or logged — you can even use the formatter offline once the page has loaded.
What indentation should I use for JSON?
Two spaces is the most common convention and the default here. Four spaces is popular in enterprise environments, and tabs are used by some editors. All three produce valid, equivalent JSON — pick whichever your team prefers.
Can it format large JSON files?
Yes. You can open or drag-and-drop files up to 10 MB. Formatting happens locally, so speed depends only on your device — there is no upload wait.
Does it support JSON with comments (JSONC)?
No. This formatter follows the strict JSON standard (RFC 8259), so comments, trailing commas, and single-quoted strings are reported as errors. That is exactly what makes it a reliable syntax checker.
Is JSONKit free to use?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no usage limits, and no ads following you around. See the FAQ at the bottom of the home page for details.
